High quality design focused books
Lead-in Design is a British design consultancy that has been delivering transportation design solutions for 20 years. Using the principles of fine detail and creativity, honesty and homour we also write, design and publish quality books with a focus on design.
Building a library of publications to read from cover to cover, or to delve into from the coffee table in a quiet moment of curiousity, our books are for marque enthusiasts, designers or book collectors.
All our books are written from an insiders point of view, both with a designers eye and with decades of experience in the tranport design industry- one of friendly competition and continual improvement. Taking lesser-known facts and presenting them in an easy to digest format with content that suprises as much as it delights making books you will want to read over again and again.
Super 3- Design by Adventure is a high quality full colour hardback book about the history of Morgan’s icnonic three-wheeler, with a foreword written by their Chief Design Officer, and input from the Super 3’s creators. Links to the pioneers of flight, motor-racing and international adventure, there surely are very few vehicles with a pedigree such as Super 3. Written by a member of the design team, this book is full of design and development images never seen before, directly accessed from the Morgan’s top secret Design Centre.
Tipping Point- Designing a Great British Underdog attracted a preface written expertly by Automobile and Yacht Design legend Patrick le Quement who was Vice President of Design for Renault. The reader is not only guided graphically through the story of one of the worlds most famous vehicles, but in true British style the flow is punctuated with tea breaks that let the reader catch up on a fact or endeavour relating to the knowledge the designer of the Robin must have when undertaking its design.
Coventry Connections- 50 Years of Transport Design at Coventry University is written and collated by two people directly connected to the automotive design industry through Coventry University. The foreword is written by Alumnus Andrew Wheel, Director of Production Design and Quality at Jaguar Land Rover who, like the majority of graduates from the groundbreaking course remember their times as a student there with affection. The founders and staff too have contributed to this richly detailed book about the history of one of the first such courses in the world to provide a gateway to a secretive and exciting industry that its applicants dreamed about for years before enrolling.
These books from Lead-in Design offer a slightly off-beat but fascinating look into the wide spectrum of transport design, its history, techniques and most importantly the people involved.
Tipping Point- Designing a Great British Underdog has been received with critical acclaim too.
Winning the prestigious Royal Automobile Clubs “Motoring Book of the Year” award for its class in 2021, and featured twice in Octane magazine. Once as their “Book of the Month” August 2021, and once featuring the author Andy Plumb and his own orange Robin.
